...especially when downshifiting. Going from a higher gear to lower gear, 1) depress clutch and put the car in neutral, 2) release clutch and rev in neutral to bring the r's up to the anticipated engine speed of the lower gear. This gets the clutch plate spinning much faster (which it doesn't when the clutch is depressed) allowing smoother (and faster) syncronization of gears. 3) With the r's up, slide into the lower gear and release the clutch. Obviously, this is all done very fast and with great coordination.
